THE COM PETIT LON S. SATURDAY’S PLAY. In contrast with the great weather of tht previous Saturday, conditions in Hawera were very unpropitious for the cricket fixtures on Saturday, and this marred the piay in the Midlands 'v. Stratford match. .Ln Eltham the weather wais perfect and in Okaiawa only one heavy shower was experienced. Excelsior scored a, three point win, Okaiawa, beat JVXanaia on the first inning’s .score, and Stratford and Midlands each played an unfinished innings. A feature of the Midlands’ innings was a fine score by Monaghan, who had fifty opposite liis name when time whs reached and he was still unbeaten. Lambert and Dobbs made a fine stand for Stratford, the former hitting hard for his 76 and the latter making a good 53. Penny and Brooke were the outstanding batsmen for Okaiawa. who ran up 172, while Hobday. H. Hughes and Bairstow made the bulk of the Manaia total of 104. Excelsior were in a winning vein and easily disposed of Eltham for 23 and 16, Lay securing the great average of five for seven and eight for seven. In the north conditions were good and scores were all fairly good. MIDLANDS V. STRATFORD., Heavy rain in the early part of the afternoon de'ayed the opening of play. Stratford brought down a full team, but Midlands were short several players apparently assuming that there would be no cricket. Batting first.
