McMillan, clerk in the Health Office of the Department of Health for about ten years, has resigned to take up farming in Taranaki. Before leaving he was the recipient of a present from members of the staff as a mark of esteem. The presentation was made by Dr.. Mercer, who expressed the' good wishes of his fellow-officers for Mr. McMillan’s success, and appreciative remarks were also made by Dr. MdKibbin. The death is announced of Mr», J, J. C. E. Statham being appointed Mr. Speaker of the new House of Representatives. He was first elected Speaker of the House on February 7, 1923, and since then, at each session, he has presided in such a way as to win the respect and admiration of all parties, says the Christchurch Sun. It has been customary always to offer a knighthood to the Speaker, so that it is practically certain that when Parliament meets in June Hon. Sir Charles Statham will take the chair. Mr. Statham is a comparatively young man to occupy the onerous position of Mr. Speaker, but his training for the law stands him in good stead. He is dignified, and while he maintains his assured position the etiquette of the New Zealand House of Representatives will not fall below its present high standard, Mr. Statham) was born at Dunedin in 1575. He is the only surviving son of Rev. O. H. Statham. of Dunedin, whose two other sons were killed on Gallipoli.
