THE CASTLE PLEDGE.
I preanise to smile every" time I can, and to chase all the fro-wns into the dark cave, where the Smile Giant will kill them with his Magic Sword Happiness. My Happy Family,— What a busy week this lias been! I expect to he,ar “election” and “Guy Fawkes” news from every quarter very soon. What a lot of Guys? Some of you were so disguised I could not recognise vou. Would you believe if? We had a Fifth of November party even at Smile Castle. I rose very early arid frightened, some of the fairies by my funny false face. Then, at night, we had fireworks and crackers. The beetles and other, creepy-crawly things made these for us, while red-hot pokers and salvia bonfires lit. up our grounds for us. Bid you have an election in your school? I am pleased voting and Guy Fawkes days are over. There was such a noise. Althoug i it will be several years before any of you can vote, I am delighted to see how much you know about, it, and how interested you are m the affairs of our country. When your turn comes I do not fear you will not use your privileges. I want now to draw your attention to next Wednesday. At a m. on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, 1918, the Armistice was effected in the Great War. On the anniversary 0 f this time a tew moments’ silence is to be observed. For, our final competition of the year, I want you to draw a border design of some flower, and leaf. You may put in buds, too. I prefer your border done in water-colour paints; but if you cannot procure paints, you may use pastels. Do you understand wha a border design is? You will find one round the carpet, the linoleum in the passage, the frieze on the wallpaper, the table cloth—all these have borders to them. In a border the design is repeated many times. For this competition I want, you to paint your design with one repeat. Notq these points: Write your, name, class (if at school) and age on your paper. Make your border from four to six inches wide, I°shall give you three weeks for this. Drawings to be in by Saturday, November 28, so that they may reach me by Thursday, December 3. George Barkla and you other boys who draw, I expect to see you try this time. All begin now, please. * - SMILE QUEEN.
