GIRLS’ SPORTS.
HAW ERA TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL.
KEEN INTEREST SHOWN
The girls of the Ha wera. 'Technical Higli School helcHtheir annual sports yesterday afternoon. The weather, which had been threatening during^the morning, cleared up and left ideal conditions for good sports. The wind, however, was a bit strong and inclined to be gusty, but this did not affect the events • a great deal. The sport caused a great deal of interest among the girls, and the results and times of the various races proved that a good deal of time had been spent in energetic training. The whole of the sports revealed a standard seldom reached bv girl athletes. Competition among the championship competitors was very keen, and the senior championship resulted in two competitors running equal with seven points each. The championship trophies are very fine, and are very much sought
by the competitors. A silver rose bowl, donated by Messrs Bennett and Sutton, goes to the senior champion, and the junior trophy is a silver cup.. The primary schools 75 yards championship caused a great dea], of interest, and was well contested. The race is novel and one that is expected to prove very popular. There were entries from Hawera, Mokoia, Matapu, and Fraser Road. After a good race E. Wards (Mokoia School) and I. French (Hawera Main School) ran a dead heat i.n ten seconds. In the final E. Wards ran welt and beat F. French by a few feet. The time was 9fsecs. Another popular race was the* pets’ race, in which a girl ran with a. pet on a string. The various kinds of pets included dogs, poultry and a lamb. Two hens caused considerable amusement by showing an inclination to fight, and lost all interest in the race. The sports were ably controlled by the teachers and a committee of girls. All the events m a large programme were got oft' smartly and the keen interest of the spectators sustained. The afternoon tea arrangements Were in charge of Miss Earle and a number of girls, and the waiting was done by the boys.
