THE KING OF SPAIN.

AN UNEXPECTED GUEST.

TOAST AT A MASON’S WEDDING

A charming story has been published in Madrid describing how King Alfonso was recently an unexpected guest at a humble wedding party. The King, accompanied by the Duke of Miranda and Count (Aybar, .was inspecting some waterworks near the Palace of the Escurial, when he heard the strains of a barrel organ near by. The King asked the reason, and was told that a. wedding was being celebrated in a neighbouring tavern. He forthwith re. paired to the spot, and before the astonished guests went up to the bride and bridegroom, a sempstress and a mason, and shook them warmly by the hand, wishing them every happiness. His Majesty then shook hands with each of the wedding guests in turn.

The bridegroom asked the inkeeper for a bottle of champagne to offer to the King, but the King replied: “I do not wish to drink champagne with you, but a bottle of the wine you were drinking when 1 arrived.” A glass of country wine was thereupon handed to the King, who drank to the health of the young couple.

The King also accepted a twopenny cigar amid the enthusiastic applause of the party, who were enchanted at his simplicity and unaffected graciousness.
