KILLED BY LION.

EX-HAWERA RESIDENT.

WHILE HUNTING IN CENTRAL AFRICA.

(BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

AUCKLAND, Nov. 4. A cable received from his widow states that Mr. W. R. Twigg, of Auckland, was killed in an encounter with a lion in Africa. Mr. Twigg and John Holmes, of Frankton Junction, left Auckland in June with the intention of going big game shooting in Central Africa. Mrs. Twigg accompanied her husband and was staying at Livingstone, Rhodesia, while Mr. Twigg and Mr. Holmes went into the wilds after game. Mr. Twigg was one of the best deer stalkers in New Zealand, and had probably the finest collection of heads in the Dominion. A considerable portion went to Wembley on loan to the Government. Mr. Twigg was very well known in business circles, and was chairman of the Twigg Engineering Company and head of W. R. Twigg, Limited.

The late Mr. Twigg was well known in Hawera and district. Many years ago he was in business here with his father in a sash and door factory, dnd left this town for Auckland to start in business on his own account. He had a good reputation in this district as a cyclist, fisherman, and deerstalker.
