PERSONAL ITEMS.

The death is reported hy a cable message from Ottawa of Sir James Lougheed, Conservative leader, at the age of 71. Sir Thomas Mackenzie is at present visiting Dunedin. He intends to revisit England next year, leaving New Zealand in January.

A visitor to Sooth Taranaki and to Hawera at present is Mr T. C. Gormley, of Auckland. Mr, Gormley will be here over the election day, and probably leave again on Friday. The Rev. G. H. McNeur, senior missionary at Canton, was nominated last evening, by the Auckland Presbytery for the position of Moderator of the General Assembly of tlie Presbyterian Church next, year. Miss Mary McLean, who for the past twenty-five years lias been principal of Wellington Girls’ College, has tendered her resignation, which takes effect from June next, says a Wellington Press Association telegram. Many friends in South Taranaki will learn with regret of the death of Mrs R. M. A. Hodge, widow of the late Mr Richard Hodge, arid formerly of Alton. Mrs Hodge is survived by one daughter (Mrs J. Hurley, of Hurleyville) and three sons, and with, them will go out sympathy from a large circle of friends.

Mr G. H. Moorish, postmaster at Stratford, has been promoted to postmaster at Whangarei, and leaves for the scene of his new duties .shortly. Mr Moorish and family came to Stratford only six months ago from Dargaville, about 40 miles from Whangarei. The following wireless message has been received from Mr T. M. Wilford, who is a passenger by the Port Dunedin, which left Wellington on October 19: “I am quite sure the voyage has done me good, and that the break from political responsibility lias been largely the cause of this. Kind remembrances to all. Trip benefiting Mrs Wilford.” Mr. A. Young, S.M., who ' will replace Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., was introduced to the Christchurch Bar yesterdav at the Magistrate’s Court by Mr. H. Y. Widdowson, S.M. Mr Young has come from Hamilton, and his place there will be taken by Mr. Wilson. Mr. W. J. Hunter, president of the Canterbury Law Society, heartily welcomed the" new magistrate, and felt sure that his co-operation with the Christchurch Bar would be for the public good. In returning thanks, Mr. Young said that he was pleased to be once more associated with Mr. Widdowson.
