BOWLING

SATURDAY’S PLAY. . There was a good attendance of players at the Hawera Park greens when friendly matches were played. The official opening of the Pihama Club took place, and this attracted quite a number of players from town, for the little club up the coast is one of the most popular with bowlers all over Taranaki. In New Plymouth. The official opening of all the clubs in New Plymouth took place on Saturday and all, favoured by the glorious weather, were most successful. The Fitzroy Cluh has been established twenty-one years, and therefore came of age on Saturday. One of the foundation members, Mr. T. G. Sole, was present and gave some interesting history of the club’s operations since its initiation.

PIHAMA CLUB

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The opening of the Pihama bowling green took place on Saturday in splendid weather. Visiting bowlers, accompanied by their wives and lady friends were present from the Hawera, Park, Stratford, Manaia, Auroa, and Opunake Clubs. The green was in good order, but was not large enough to accommodate all the players, so some of the local players took it in turns to stand down for half the game.

In the absence of Mr. R. Lambie, president of the club, Mr. F. Julian welcomed the visitors in an appropriate speech and called on Miss M. Lambie to open the green by throwing the jack. At the conclusion of the usual game President v. Vice-President, Messrs SmaTt (Stratford) and G. Johnston (Auroa), on behalf of the visitors, thanked the local players and the ladies for the hospitality extended to them. The customary cheers concluded a very enjoyable afternoon. Following are the scores, the president’s teams being mentioned first: Poynter, Cowan, Villars, G. Smart 17; Dunn, Murdoch, Neilson, Grant, 27.
