THE EGG MARKET.
PRICES FAIRLY GOOD. LARGE NUMBERS BEING PRESERVED. Reports from centres in the South Island that eggs were scarce and consequently dear for this time of the year are reflected in the position in this district. It appears, from inquiry of merchants in Hawera, that Ithe larger poultry farmers, following their custom when eggs fall below a certain level, to preserve, all their output in order to keep for higher prices later in the season. This has operated to make somewhat of a shortage and a consequent hardening in the market rates. Quite recently over eight hundred dozen eggs were consigned to a Wanganui firm for preserving purposes!, at the very high figure of Is 6d per dozen. This, combined- with the action of the local producers, had had a decided effect in forcing prices Upward. The retail price is a .good deal above. the normal figure for this part of the season. The export to the Home market was also a contributing cause. But it is agreed by all concerned in the industry that to make poultry farming pay it is necessary to get a good price, for with fowl wheat at 10s to 10s 6d a bushel it will he realised the _ cost of feeding is a very heavy item in the general cost of production. The position seems to forecast higher prices for Christmas.
