The Hawera Star.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER, 29, 1925. FOR THE BANDS.

Delivered every evening by 5 o’clock in Hawera, Mariaia, Normanby, Okaiawa, Eltham, Mangatoki, Kaponga, Alton, Hurleyville, Pa tea, Waverley, Mokoia, Whakamara, Ohangai, Heremere, Fraser Road, and Ararata.

In another tcolumn to-day the president and secretary of the Hawera Bands’ Bazaar, Ladies’ 'Committee express their disappointment at the poor attendance of the public for the opening sessions of the bazaar yesterday. While it is early yet to estimate the final success or otherwise of the big combined' effort for the bands, the public will appreciate the feelings of those public-spirited ladies who have been working so enthusiastically over a number of weeks. The fear that their best, efforts have made no impression whatever on the people of the town and that the object for which they have striven so whole-lieartedily may now be defeated by public apathy may quite understandably have a dampening effect upon the ardour of the lady workers. But we feel sure that their fears are groundless. Hawera’s pride in both the municipal and pipe bands is more than an. empty boast; the response made already to the several appeals on behalf of the different queen candidates has proved that; and this final opportunity of- assisting the common cause will net be passed by

lightly. It is unfortunately true that j the attendances yesterday afternoon and evening were disappointingly small—although those present showed themselves liberal . patrons —and the reason for the small musters is not immediately apparent, unless it be that the conVmittee’s decision to levy a charge for admission does not commend itself to the public. The more usual custom, in enterprises of this nature is to allow people in free —and then to set to work to wheedle from them every cent they have brought. But, whatever the reason for the poor response yesterday, we are more than hopeful that it will prove to have been merely a temporary oversight on the part of the townspeople. As Mrs Pacey and Mrs Simpson remark, the country districts have, given liberally to/the bands’ appeal, although the object touches more directly the people of Hawera. "We believe that Hawera town will see to it in the next three days that the bazaar is made the splendid success which the devoted work of the Indies’ committee so richly deserves.
