RIFLE SHOOTING.
HAWERA DEFENCE CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Haw-era Defence Rifle Club was held in tlie Savoy Tea Rooms last evening, when Mr A. G. Robertson (president) presided over a medium attendance. In introducing Iris annual report the president remarked that he had expected a larger number of members, out the fact that Llie meeting ,was being held later in the year than usual accounted for the absence of many of the country members. The annual report was then read, the president referring briefly to the loss sustained by rillc clubs through the deaths of Colonel Collins and General Melvill. Votes of condolence with the relatives of the deceased gentlemen, and also with Rifleman C. Murch in the loss of his wife were passed, the members standing in silence. Continuing his report, the president remarked that the club w'as successful during the past season in winning the Taranaki Shield from Patea,. only to lose it to New Plymouth on their second attempt. A fair percentage of members had competed at outside meetings >yith distinct success. Included amongst the successes were the championship belt and gold medal at New Plymouth, President Robertson; tyro aggregate at Wanganui, ' Rifleman C. Murch; the Memorial Cup at New Plymouth, Hawera team (President Robertson, Riflemen G. Harrison, L. Harrison, G. Smith and A. H. Jones). Many other members’ names figured in the prize lists at. these meetings. The balance-sheet showed the club to be in a sound financial position. The annual report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted. . After further business had been dispensed with, Mr P. Petersen was elected a life member for past services, many members making eulogistic references to his great work on behalf of the club.
The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr J. R. Corrigan, M.P. (reelected); president, Mr A. G-. Robert- , son (re-elected); vice-presidents, Riflemen T. Geary and P. Petersen; general committee, Riflemen Cross. Murch and Wild; secretary, Mr F. Ching; treasurer, Mr A. Elgar; auditor, Mr F. McCalman. The matter of a shooting committee was held over until after the opening day. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. In the unavoidable absence of Major Bremner, the trophies won during the year were presented by Mr A. Blair as under: Championship Belt and Gold Medal. —Rifleman Geo. Cross (321) 1, President Robertson (312) 2. President’s Trophy.—Rifleman Wild (93) 1, Rifleman Jones (93) 2, Rifleman Ching (91)- 3. Bennett and Sutton Cup.—Rifleman G. Smith (1891 1, Rifleman Cross (188) 9. Brunette Cup.—Rifleman A. Uttinger (95) 1, Rifleman E. Uttinger (90) 2. Hallenstein Cup.—Rifleman P. Wild (325) 1, President A. G. Robertson (323) 2. All-comers’ Cup.—Rifleman A. Uttinger (93) 1. Mr Catran’s Trophy.—Rifleman P. Wild (181) 1, Rifleman P. Petersen (180) 2. Votes of thanks to the acting-secre-tary (Mr A. Elgar), to Mr S. J. Catran for his donation of trophies, to the Soldiers Club for the use of room for committee meetings, to the local press and the chairman concluded a splendid meeting.
