A NATION’S DEFENCE
AVIATION’S AID.
SHIPS STILL FIRST LINE. AMERICAN EXPERT’S OPINION. cable--tress association-copißioni Received Oct. 28, 12.30 p.m. NEW I OKlii, Oct. 27. Admiral Hilary Jones, a member of the Navy General Board, speaking at the National Navy day celebrations at Philadelphia, declared that ships, not aeroplanes were the first line of the nation’s defence. Aviation introduced a new and highly- important development into naval warfare. It had taken its place as an •important element in a fleet in the latter’s, exercise of sea power and could not be separated therefrom. The purpose of naval air service was to contribute to the success of the fleet in a battle, and therefore the fleet’s ultimate exercise of sea power. Peace time organisations must be built up with that object and with no other in view.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
