SCHNEIDER CUP.
HINCKLER FAILS TO QUALIFY. ACCIDENT TO BRITISH MACHINE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. WASHINGTON, Oct. 24. The accident to Britain’s so-called mystery plane, super-marine Napier S 4, occurred when a series of wing flutters and side-slips led to a nose dive into Chesapeake Bay, after which it turned over.
The: pilot. Captain Henry Baird, wearing a lifebelt, cleared the wreckage as it sank. A brother pilot, Captain Hubert Broad, tossed a second lifebelt from his plane, after which the patrol boat rescued Baird, who was dazed and unable to explain the occurrence. Baird is in bed, the doctors fearing pneumonia. He 'bad been ill for several days and only left his bed daily to fly a few minutes. Bert Hinekler, of Melbourne, a reserve pilot of the British Schneider Cup team, will be given a chance to take liis Gloster Napier seaplane into the international race on Saturday. When five opposing American and Italian pilots signed a petition asking that he be allowed to qualify before the race, the referee, Mr. Erickson, agreed. If Hinekler qualifies liis plane will be substituted for the supermarine Nauier S 4. VANCOUVER, Oct. 24.
A Baltimore message announces that the Schneider race has been postponed from Saturday until Sunday ow. ing to the stormy weather. Hinekler failed to qualify on Saturday owing to his engine stalling, frustrating the British Diane to secure a substitute for the crashed machine.
Weather permitting, the Schneider race will be held on Monday instead of Sunday
