ATHLETICS.

SPORTS AND ROAD RACE. HAWERA EVENTS TO-DAY. The weather conditions were good for thei sports meeting to-day at Hawera. It was a dull morning, but there was a much appreciated absence of a. light northerly blowing during the forenoon.

The Showground was en fete for the gathering, which had attracted athletes in running and jumping, and cycle riders from many parts of the North Island.

Special interest was taekn in the cycle road race, in which a large number of good riders, including C. H. Griffen, Meal, and from other parts, took part.

GRIFFEN’S GREAT PERFORMANCE

FASTEST TIME IN 50 MILES AT GISBORNE.

Among the contestants in the road race was C. H. Griffen, one of the most popular and successful of the local “knights of the wheel.” Griffen is just back from Gisborne, where he took part in the 50 miles handicap event, run in conjunction with the New Zealand championship. He started on BJmins handicap. The Times’, commenting on his performance, said: “The fastest time of the day was put up by C. H. Griffen, of Hawera. who ran a most consistent race, and made the journey in 2hrs 34min 26sec, thus beating the championship winner by 23secs. Griffen rode a machine buPt for him by Mr L. Marter.

Describing the race, the Times said: “The pace increased on the run home. An indication of the speed can be taken from the fact that at the Waerengaahika College Griffen was travelling at 27 miles an hour. He finished Imin Iseo behind Davis, the limit man, who had a. handicap of 28mins.”
