AN ACRE IN SIZE.
SOMETHING LIKE A RAFT. BUENOS AYRES, Sept. 9. Sailing up the Parana river the Prince, of AVales met a timber raft of about an acre in size, which had travelled 1700 miles in eight weeks from Brazil. On the brown flood of the swiftlyflowing Parana (writes a correspondent) we had the luck to meet an exceptionally large timber raft floating downstream. It had been on its way for eight weeks, and had travelled 1700 miles from Brazil. The tent and the washing of the family in charge of it were flapping in the breeze on about an acre of wood paving. It was made up of cedar and of the heavy quebracho wood, which under water becomes solid as stone, never decays, and so is much used as harbour piles. Its cultivation for export has greatly increased in the last few years, and has made several considerable fortunes for dwellers in this natural Tom Tiddler’s ground of the Argentine. ,
