U.S. FLEET.
SOUTH PACIFIC CRUISE. REPORT BY ADMIRAL COONTZ. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT WASHINGTON, Oct. 24. Admiral Coontz, officially reporting to the Navy Department on the Australian and New Zealand trip, called it the greatest and most successful cruise ever attempted by the American Navy. He urged that similar trips he made every three years. The cruise showed that efforts to make the fleet self-sustaining for six mOnths were not yet successful, hut were approaching that state. While aeroplanes were useful, he had doubts of the usefulness of dirigibles in major fleet operations. The fleet was in a , condition to repeat the voyage at 24 r-hours’ notice. The .total cost was 7515,000 dollars. The benefits were naval, 'national and international. Australians and New Zealanders had shown great hospitality. Admiral Coontz urged the construction of , ’plane-carriers, and stated that the fleet needed an additional oiler.
