AUSTRALIAN NOTES.
tt Y CA HIE—TEN.vi ASSOCIATION —COEYRIGHT MELBOURNE, Oct. 22.
Scratchings for the Melbourne Cup are Loughrea, Miss Disraeli and Kylex, arid Bindo for the Derby. .Ivylex, Ambassador and Governor-General visited the Flemington tracks this morning. A. Reed rides Valwyn in Saturday’s Moonee Valley Cup race, G. Harrison rides Tookarby, and W. Duncan rides Smoke Bomb.* At Mentone to-day Heroic and Royal Charter did nine furlongs striding. Smoke Bomb went a mile in 1.43. NOTES AND COMMENTS. THE WAVERLEY MEETING. (By Maecenas.) Last year the Egmont-Wauganui Hunt Club held its annual meeting at Wanganui on August 16, and, striking bad weather, only £8631 went through the totalisator. If favoured with fine weather to-morrow the club will nearly 'double these figures. San Fera won very- easily at the North Taranaki Hunt Club’s meeting, but the race was rather an unsatisfactory one; so White Ranger, which is so well seasoned, or Ban juke, which showed surprisingly good form at the Marton spring meeting, may make the Hunters’ Hurdles interesting. The field for the Maiden Handicap to-morrow- is a large one at present, but as the safety number for the course is 19, it may mean that the club will not have to divide the race. Duetto when not ready- showed speed at the Marton meeting, and Seastar can also go fast, so this pair should have friends.
At the recent Avondale meeting All Wind ran a very fair race in the Maiden on the opening day, when opposing some good “hacks.”’ On the second day All Wind fell when contesting the Hurdles. On his best form this son of All Red should run well, but Goldpiece is certain to prove hard to beat.
At. the Wanganui meeting Filette ran well, but the following week gave a poor display at the Otaki meeting. Should Filette- run up to her Wanganui form, .she will show up prominently in the Waverley- Hack Handicap to-morrow.
Price has run quite a number of good races in hunter class this season, and if as well as when at the Marton meeting last month he will prove a' formidable opponent in the Hunt Club Cup . to-morrow. The Flying Handicap at the EgmontWnngainii meeting bears an open appearance, hut if Pouma runs up to her form of the Wanganui meeting held last month, she must he one of the hardest to beat.
Supporter was going ns well as any of his opponents •when he fell at the Marton'meeting last month, lint with a stand-up in the Hunt Cup at Waverley lie looks certain to make Price carry his weight. > The horses engaged in the Ladies’ Bracelet are by no means a serviceable lot, but if reserved for the event
Supporter may run well, although Fire Brigade with a good rider would be his master.
THE TRENTHAM MEETING
The weather at Trentham during the last few days has been splendid, and to-morrow the race track should be at its best, although it may not be quite as fast as at many other spring meetings held there.
•Humbug’s son, Decoy Bird, is well seasoned by now, and will have the advantage of R. Reed’s services in the Taita Handicap to-morrow, so he should show up well in the event. Although the Taranaki Te Monanui will be opposing some of the very best horses in not only New Zealand, but Australasia, when contesting the Wellington Handicap, he can be depended upon to put up a good race. As J. Barry will ride Te Monanui he should not suffer on the score of horseman-, ship. At present 39 horses figure in the October Handicap, and as the safety number of the course is 27 a divisional race is well-nigh a certainty. The Thorn is well just now, and may show up in one of the divisions.
A number of riders intend riding at Trentham to-morrow, and, catching the “limited” on Sunday night, will he riding at the Waikato Hunt Club meeting at Te Rapa on Monday. At Trentham to-morrow R. Reed will ride Rapine, Ilka, Tresham, Decoy Bird, Star Stranger, Lysander, and Gauntlet, while J. Barry’s mounts will be Te Monanui, Commendation, Spode, Mandane, Indian Sage, Piquant or Nadarino, Oration or Hipo. The two riders mentioned should secure some wins. ■
A number of very useful performers are engaged in the* Wainui Handicap, including some New Zealand Cup candidates. On the form shown by her in the Wanganui Guineas (where she made up quite ten lengths on Father O’Flynn over the last three furlongs) Mandane must have an undeniable chance with only 31b over the minimum.
Many of the so-called hacks engaged in the Rimutaka Handicap would quite hold ■ their, own in “open” company. One may qqote Star Stranger, Ring the Bell, Subjection, Indian Sage, and Bisox, as five from the number that should soon get out of this class. Possibly Star Stranger may do best tomorrow.
Since coming to Trentham Commendation has done remarkably well, and it certainly points to his winning the Wellesley Stakes, in which event the son of Limond will have the services of J. Barry. Note is galloping well just now, but does not appear to be in the same class as Commendation.
A field of extra good class will line up for the Wellington Handicap tomorrow, and a good race should result. As stated before in this column, Rapine ran a wonderful race in the Avondale Cup, when one considers the weight (9.9) lie carried and the condition of the course. So with R. Reed in the saddle and the course in firstclass order it is difficult to select one, even from this good field, to beat Rapine, which, when at his best, is one of the best performers in Australasia.
