A London press cable message states that Lady Gwendoline Jellicoe has been operated on for appendicitis. The ’bus which will convey members of the Hawera Orchestral Society to Eltham for the concert to-morrow evening will leave the Methodist Church at 6.30 p.m. .... Want of rain and droughty conditions are seriously affecting crops apd pasture in many country districts (says a message from Sydney). Unless there is rain soon, prospects are depressing. In some places a day of special prayers for min is being held. The body of Richard Green, t\liich was reached in Lake Coleridge tunnel slip on Tuesday morning after 19 days search, will probably not be got clear of debris until to-morrow or Friday. According to a report from Lake Coleridge, the position in which the body is lying makes the work of recovery extremely difficult, a large quantity of timber having to be cleared away first. The search for the body of Archibald McDonald is being pushed ahead with vigour, but it mav be a week before it can be got out. * A large number of tunnoilers attended the funeral of MeFarlanc, which took place at Christchurch yesterday afternoon. The fusing of an underground electric cable, followed by two explosions, caused excitement in Queen Street, Auckland, at a busy hour last night. The fusing was followed by a fire beneath the pavement. Girls in adjacent shops, thinking the building was on fire, broke aplate glass window and made their escape with a few cuts. All suffered from shock. The electric staff soon repaired the damage.
