A ROMAN SITE.
DISCUVERY OF CENTRAL HEATED BATHS. . LONDON, Aug. 26. A Roman site, covering at least several acres, has been found in Ashtead Forest, Surrey. , . There has already been unearthed the foundations of what are believed to be the indoor bathing quarters — centrally heated from a charcoal furnace —of .a 'Surge villa, 'including a hypocaust (hollow space under the floor, in which heat from the furnace was 'accumulated for heating a house or hath), and. what is rare in Roman buildings in this country, a. circular chamber 17 feet in diameter. There has been collected a large quantity of jtjeoorated plaster, varicoloured tessellated pavement and tiles, and numerous pieces of pottery, including first century Samian ware, boars’ tusks,' silver glass articles and ornaments. Mr Anthony Lowther, of Aslitead, made’the discovery through seeing hits of Roman tiles outside a rabbit burrow. The site is about 2:\ miles from the Roman road that runs from Lea.ther.head Downs to Epsom Downs.
