NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Maecenas.”) Waetea won very decisively at,the Carterton meeting on Saturday, and many good judges are certain that this well-bred but much-despised mare will fill a place in the coming New Zealand Cup. The two-year-old Commendation has galloped well since going to Trentham, and something very smart will have to be unearthed to lower his colours in the Wellesley Stakes on Saturday next. Runnymede, the three-year-old son of the defunct King John, went well at Trentham on Tuesday, and apparently is in good fettle.' His appearance in the Champion Plate on Monday next will add to the great .amount of interest this race has already created.
The Australian-bred Mali Jong (Comedy King—Chu), who cost Mr. A. B Williams a good figure, and from whom much was expected, figures in the Novice Stakes of 80 sovs. to be decided at Waipawa on Monday. Last season Licinius was a particularly brilliant youngster, and in his only public appearance this year, the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, showed that lie •still retained his speed. Licinius at 7.7 is nicely handicapped in the Stewards’ Handicap to be decided at Ricoarton next month.
As that great mare Glentruin has not had a race for thirteen months, and received 9.13 in the Stewards’ Handicap, it can be looked on as very improbable that the English-bred mare will run prominently in that event. If Nigger Minstrel i's as good as the writer thinks, 9.5 should not prove too much for him at Riccarton. Tanadees is galloping very well at Trentham ,just now. The Australianbred gelding will be ridden by H. Goldfinch in the Wellington Handicap on Saturday next. ; Goldfinch handled Tanadees well at Avondale, where fie won the chief handicap on the second day. .Trainer T. E. Quinlivan lias arrived back at Trentham with .Royal Divorce. Fool’s Paradise, Black Cat, Dubious, and March Past, and they were doing easy pacing work on Tuesday morning. Royal Divorce looks particularly well.
As Musketoon has been allowed to drop out of his Wellington engagements and is nominated for the Mitclielson Cup it would appear as if the Canterbury trip is off. as far as the Englishbred horse is concerned. Although it is difficult to get any authentic information about the movements of N. Cunningham’s team, the writer. hears on reliable authority that Musketoon will be at the Auckland meeting next month
Te' Kara will compete at the Wellington meeting, and will then go; on to Riccarton for liis New Zealand Cup engagement. For the benefit of those who fancy this great stayer for the big two-mile event it can be stated with certainty that To Kara has done a good preparation for his spring engagements, and with a race nr two in public ho will strip a very fit horse. In mnnv past engagements Te Kara was ridden by that once fine rider the late J. O’Shea, and as the pair worked in perfect harmony the rider named will be much missed.
