TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL.
MEETING op board. • The monthly meeting, of the .Board of Managers of the Hawera Technical High School was held last evening. There were present: Mrs W. Gilbert, Messrs R. S. Sage (chairman), A. Gray; (principal), W. -Crompton, W. 3. Howell, T. C. Hobbs, W. Entwistle, J, B. Murdoch and J. W. Harding. The chairman reported that the grounds committee had,',, decided, to postpone the laying down of the grounds until the summer vacation, when the school would/ be unoccupied. The principal .reported that the roll number of pupils was now 166, being made up as follows: Commercial 65, literary 76, agriculture 3, engineering 17, home science 5. This total was the same ,as at the corresponding period last year. “We have again had considerable trouble with water in the furnace room, ’’ continued the principal, “and have again been assisted by Mr Morrison. Mr Morrison suggested that the pump in view would be suitable for the purpose of emptying the water and would also be useful for cleaning, etc.”
“The steeplechase was held on the 14th inst., and,,,was very successful. The school is indebted t,o ome of the spectators, Mr Carl Dahl, for donating a medal for the winner, R. Morrissey, who put up a very fine performance. It is proposed to hold the girls’ sports on Wednesday, November 4, and the boys’ sports a week later. In eonj'unetion with the sports, since other schools are discontinuing the invitation Tace, it is of little use our keeping, it on our programme. In lieu of this race we propose to include a primary school championship race, open to all- schools in South Taranaki, competitors to be under the age of 15 years on December 1. The medals for these races will be supplied by 'the boys and respectively of the school, each pupil contributing a small amount. I beg to apply fo/r a donation of, say, £lO to the sports fund. The cricket and tennis season is at hand, and new material has had to be bought. The match between the two local football clubs, the gate receipts of which were divided between the school sports fund and the carnival queen effort, wasi marred by heavy rain, our share amounting to only £2 11s 9d. The football team wishes to express appreciation of the action of Mr Garnett, who invited the members to be present at the cricket concert, which was greatly enjoyed. The end of the year is approaching, and the pupils are busy preparing for examination. As nlext Monday (Labour Day) is a holiday, and as most schools had more breaks,- or a. longer vacation than, we had last term, I suggest that the school close on Friday, so that a short half-term may be obtained. ” rt.--In response to an enquiry the principal said that it was believed the water in tjie furnace room was caused by seepage. The water .came in following rain,, and at times.umounted to three.inches in. depth. As- there was no pump on the premises, It. .had . to be left. If a pump was purchased the caretaker could pump out: the .water in l a few minutes.
Mr Murdoch suggested that the inside of the room be giv&n a, coat .of eement. . / . Mr Sage: “It.would probably havb to be pitched.” Mr Murdoch suggested digging a pit outside the school, but it was pointed out that the water level in that locality was very near the surface. Mr Harding stressed the necessity of some permanent improvement.,i,and that the purchase of a pump. would, still leave, the work of removing the water. / It was ultimately decided to. ask Mr l Brown to give an opinion as to. the A best method of improving the- situation. . . The Board agreed to the principal’s request for a holiday representing a half-term break. The school,.will be closed on Friday and work will be resumed on Tuesday. - A resolution was passed recommending that all item's of special expenditure should receive the Board ? s authority. : The chairman reported that the Director of Education (Mr-.J. G. Caughley) will be in Hawera during the. second week in November ana will give-an address on education mattG Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Dahl and Garnett.
