ENGINEER’S MONTHLY REPORT. The concrete kerbs and channels in Albion Street (east side) are now completed and earth trimmed 1 on path. Tar macadam work cannot proceed until ivann weather dries the stone chips preparatory to tarring them. There are two old wooden storm water culverts across .Glover Road, near tto Argyie Street. They are quite rotten and may cave in soon. The old arrangement was unsatisfactory. The water passed into a box laid at considerable depth to enable it to pass below the railway embankment in a tunnel. This tunnel was abandoned years ago and a ditch cut through the railway property. The old deep pipe still leads into the ditch. For some forgotten reason there is a vertical shaft of some depth through which the water issues before getting into the ditch. There is a danger of children falling, into it. although we have put a grid over. The decay of the two old culverts referred to above makes it best to simplify the whole arrangement. This can now be done by means of one large pipe across Glover Road discharging on the surface into the" ditch. This is so obviously the best course that I have made concrete pipes for the purpose. The cost of pipes works out. at about half what similar piljes from Waitara would cost at the station. The above follows out our usual policy of endeavouring to do all repairs or renewals in a permanent manner with permanent materials, so that the job- is then done with. INSPECTOR’S REPORT.
The borough inspector reported that house inspection had been carried out in the following streets, namely, Glover Road, High Street (business area), and a few houses in Union Street to see if repair notices had been complied with. Fourteen drivers’ licenses were issued during the month; nine heavy traffic licenses were issued, making a total to date of 25. One dangerous goods depot was inspected and licensed. Owing to wet weather the Kapuni river had not been inspected, but he intended doing so as soon as the river had subsided enough to allow it to be waded LIBRARY. The number of members has 'been reduced to 489, 20 leaving during the month of September and 10 new ones joined. Forty-one books were bought; including three of travel. RANGER’S REPORT. Three horses and one cow were found straying. The surface of the road below the borough stables is v r ery slippery, and a number of horses have come down on the road, which needs attention. SANITARY INSPECTOR. During September 88 premises were inspected and notices issued where required. One plumbing and fine drainage permit were issued, and one drain was tested.
ABATTOIR. Stock slaughtered comprised 26 bullocks, 79 cows, 59 heifers, 373 sheep, 5 Calves, and 78 pigs.
