RECORD PRIZES OFFERED. In four short weeks the greatest carnival New Zealand has ever known will be in full swing. On Tuesday, November 17, the Governor-General will oxien the great New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition at Dunedin, and for five months thereafter it will be the common topic of conversation throughout the Jength and breadth of the Dominion and in countless letters from friend to friend. The wonderful exhibits so strikingly displayed in the huge pavilions, the magnificent collection of art and sculpture in the Art Gallery with its 10,000 square feet of walls, the presence of so famous a, military band as that of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, the entertainments in the great Festival Hall, and the unique attraction of the wonderful Amusement Zone of 2o acres, with, the big scenic railway and dozens of other thrills and surprises—even these do not complete the broad outline of the wonderful holiday that visitors to the exhibition will enjoy. A largje sum of money has been set aside so that record prizes may be offered for four big contests. For the international tug-of-war carnival, from January 13 to ,20 (inclusive), £IOOO has been allocated. There are four competitions—the international competition, open to representative national teams; the all-comers’ championship of Australasia and South Sea islands, teams to he endorsed representatives of their various trades or callings ; the special championship for military, naval and police forces and fire brigades; and the footballers’ championship, open to Rugby, League, and Association teams. The first prize for the international competition is £4OO, and there is sure to be a strenuous fight for such a reward. The other contests are the grand axemen’s carnival (including professional running, piping, and Highland dancing), from January 6 to 9, with £9OO in prizes; the championship competitions festival, from January 6 to 12, with prizes amounting to £280; and the big contest for brass bands, from February 20 to 27, for which £IOOO has been set aside. The competitions festival (vocal, instrumental, and elocutionary) will be open only to competitors who are 16 years or over. In the whole festival there will not be a single set piece.
