AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

PROPOSED AMERICAN TOUR

Although the recent proposal to .invite American and Australian, athletes to New Zealand had to be abandoned, the Wellington Centre has put forward a new scheme, which has been adopted by the New Zealand Council. The advisory committee of the W ellington Centre has asked C. G. Krogness, a member of the last American team and the council’s representative in America, to arrange for Jackson V. Scholz and Ray B.,Buker to .tour New Zealand. The committee knows, that Scholz is available, but lias not received information regarding Buker. In case Buker is not available it is proposed to ask Krogness to select, according to his opinion, the best athlete of Allan Helffrich, Lloyd Hehn, or Cecil Cook. Jackson B. Scholz is a world cliamnion sprinter, lie having won the 260 metres’ at |the Olympic Games last year and. being placed second in the 100 metres. R-a-y B. Buker was first in the 1924 one-miie American champion, ship in 4min. 24 4-sseo., and in the same year was first in the 1500 metres championship at the Tailteann Gaines, and third in the 800 metres championship at the Tailteann Games. He won the American one-mile champions nip in July of this year in 4min. 19 2-5 S€ The secretary of the' advisory .committee writes: “Although the Wanga-nui-West Coast Centre could not see its way clear to guarantee the necessary amount, it is proposed to write to the Hawera. Amateur Athletic Club, a very live club, and offer “them an appearance of the Americans at Hawera n February 3 (race night} provided the club guarantees £30.” As the Hawera committee offered a crujvi'jvTi'tee of £3O in connection With the recently proposed tour which the New Zealand Council turned down, it is not unlikely that the committee, when it meets' at 5 p.m. next Tuesday, will be in accord with the new proposal.
