MANAIA.

PERSONAL. The funeral of Lulu Rei, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Ware Rei, was V held on Thursday afternoon, when there was a very large attendance of citizens of Manaia and district, as well as Maoris present to pay their last respect to the little deceased and to express sympathy with her parents and brothers in their bereavement. Many of her Manaia State School mates were present, and the hearse was drawn by . them from Waiokura Pa to the cemetery. Many wreaths were placed on. the casket by both pakeha and Maori, which went to show the high esteem in which' the little girl was he’d. The pall-bearers were Messrs B. Badland, J. E. Wells, A. Andrews, S. Rei, A. Elkington, and Isaac. Rei. General regret will lie felt by the residents of Manaia and district at the sudden death on Octohter 10 in New York City, of Miss Annie Walton, late of Palmerston North and Eeilding, and sister of Mis H. M. I. Mclvor, wife of the popular manager of the Bank of Australasia, Manaia. Two years ago she went to New York City to live with her brother, Mr Holmes ,0. Walton, where, by her kindly. disposition, she made a large circle of friends. Much sympathy is extended, to Mr and Mrs Mclvor in their bereavement. LABOUR HAY. A general meeting of the combined committees in connection with the benefit which is to be given to ex-Fireman Dee; to take place in the Manaia Domain on Labour Day, was held on Thursday evening in the Fire Brigade Station, Captain G. White presiding. There was a large attendance, and representatives of the Ladies’ Hockey Club, Manaia .Soccer Club, Manaia Municipal Brass Band, Manaia Rugby and Manaia Municipal Fire Brigade were present. _ ,* Supper arrangements in connection with the hard-up dance to .be held in the evening in Manaia Town Hill were left in the hands of the Ladies’ Hbckey Club;!- Many details in fedhriection with the afternoon’s programme were dealt with. It was unanimously resolved to invite the Hawera and Auroa Soccer Clubs to be present on that day, and to give their ’assistance to the goos cause. The procession, which .leaves the Fire Brigade Station at 1 p.m., should be worth seeing. All officials have been arranged for the day. No. doubt a splendid afternoon’s sport is assured; and as the object is a noteworthy one, a large attendance is anticipated. , ‘ 1 ' FARMERS’ .UNION. / _ Members of the Manaia Farmers’ Union are requested to attend a very important meeting to-night in the Council Chambers. A full attendance is requested. An advertisement appears in to-night’s Star in reference to the matter. *» BAND CONCERT. The Manaia Municipal Brass Band will rentier a programme in the Rotunda to-night, commencing at 7.30 o’clock sharp. A full muster is requested. CHORAL SOCIETY. Considerable interest is being manifested in the maiden effort of ' the Choral Society, which takes place in the Town Hall next Wednesday. The society has been fortunate in securing the services of Mrs Wildish as soloist, while the local performers have been practising jealously for some time and should give a good account of themselves. All music lovers are urged to he present and encourage the society in its first appearance before the public. -,A varied, programme of part songp, quartettes, etc., will* be presented.
