A. Press Association message from Hobart states that the Tasmanian Assembly has passed a Bill ipermitting women to be elected to the Launceston City Council. A steady decrease in the amount ol ; British silver coinage in circulation in Australia has been effected through the offer of a cash bonus on surrender of the coins. Up till the end of September the amount, brought in to the Commonwealth Bank throughout Australia , and exchanged for Australian currency was £327,434. Sums surrendered in the States were: New South Wales £99,807, Victoria £133,334, Queensland £38,149, South Australia £31,138 Western Australia £15,233, Tasmania £9773. At the present rate British silver is being withdrawn in amounts of nearly £25,000 a week. How much of this British silver remains in circulation in Australia is not definitely known, but, according to estimate, there ‘ must still he an amount equivalent to, if not greater than, that already surrendered. As ■the British coinage is withdrawn Australian tabes its place.
