BREACH OF PROMISE.
INDIAN TO PAY DAMAGES. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Oct 14. Eve Mutaman, a shop employee, was awarded £IOOO against Manandra Matri, a successful Indian barrister, for breach of promise 14 years ago. She gave evidence that she lived in the same boardinghouse as him in 1911, when he was a law student in England. She was then 25. They became friendly, and she took, an interest in his work. Then they became engaged, and she subsequently gave birth to a son. When Matri passed his law examinations with honours he went to India, where he had an Indian wife. She had not heard of him since, hence the delay in taking action. Questions in court revealed that the only present received from Matri was a halfpenny Christmas card. “He never bought me sweets,” said. Matri in defence said he did not promise marriage. The girl’s story was a concoction of lies.
