A NEW CHAPTER
IN EUROPEAN HISTORY.
PEACE-MAKING TREATY. EPOCH-MAKING EVENT, BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Oct. 15, 1 p.m. LOCARNO, Oct. 14. Mr. Chamberlain, Secretary for Foreign Affairs, has announced that such a measure of agreement has been reached that no country could take the responsibility for nullifying it. They opened a new chapter in European history, which would be not only a paper peace, but a peace within the councils of Governments and the hearts of men. The treaty of Loearna; would Seem to be the real watershed between peace and war, even more than the Treaty of Versailles. A satisfactory feature was that this measure of agreement had not been reached by the triumph of one set of views over another, or the surrender of' one delegation to another, hut had been arrived at naturally from common interest and mutual goodwill. He stated that he and Sir Ceeil Hurst placed their services at the disposal of the delegation which was trying to reach an agreement on the question of eastern frontiers. He was confident that it would be possible xo be bound together by close ties.Jt was generally assumed that the conference would conclude early next week. —Reuter.
GERMAN ATTITUDE. POSITION! UNCERTAIN. A CRISIS TALKED ABOUT. Received Oct. 15, 1 p.m. BERLIN, Oct. 14. While official quarters insist that the Locarno conference ha® not yet reached a crisis, it .is admitted that after Kempner’s report to President Hindenburg, which is likely to be followed by a joint session of President Hindenburg and the Cabinet, a telegram may be sent to the German delegation at Locarno. An official stated that there were two possibilities; either the Locarno delegation would be told to go straight ahead, or telegrams would be sent which were likely to result in the break-up of the conference. —Reuter.
