REDUCTION OF DUTIES.
THE WHALING INDUSTRY. SAVING TO CONSUMERS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received Oct. 14, 11.15 a.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 14.
The Comptroller of Customs estimates that about half a million sterling should be saved to local manufacturers and consumers by the reduction of duties, which he recommended to the Tariff Board yesterday. The making of the recommendations is the following up of the Government’s nolicy of relieving loca/1 manufacturers of penalties on imported raw materials, the only object of which was to produce revenue and consumers of the imposts which enhanced the cost of living. In order to encourage the whaling industry on the Australian coasts, the Government decided to admit whaling vessels free of duty, when not of the kind being built in Australia.
