Oroquet Club are becoming known was again indicated on Thursday evening, when a gathering of 140 residents or the district- participated in the dance and cards tournament arranged by the club an the Kaponga Town Hall. Shortly after 8 p.m. the Ms.’C., Messrs C-. H. Brewer and M. Priest, set the dancers in motion, and throughout a well balanced programme of music provided by Boulton's orchestra caused each number .t-o- be much enjoyed. Much interest -was provided by popular waltzing competitions, an which Miss EL Bennie and Mr. Harris secured -the guinea -trophy in the maiden event, while the open reversing contest was won by Muss Mount and Mr. Collins. Mr D. Briggs (Kaponga) gave efficient attention to his exacting duties as judge. Other competitive events included a card dance, in which the lucky pair proved to he Miss Noonan and Mr. Mickelson, a ispott dance, in which the winning honours fell to Mrs and Mr Gibbons, and a balloon dance, won by Miss Brooker and Mr. Des Forges, at the conclusion of a trial necessitating agile movement and which was productive of enthusiastic merriment. Mementos of the occasions were presented ■ to the successful couples. Supplementing the dance programme a euchre tournament arranged by Mr. A. Hawkins attracted numerous entrants, of whom Mesdames C. S. Hill (first) and O. H. Brewer (second) recorded the highest numbers of winning games. A dainty supper was served by a bevy of courteous ,attendants, under the (supervision of Mrs. 0. H. Brewer, and throughout the evening .services which were accorded unstinted patronage were provided by Mrs. A. Hawkins and others as vendors of cooling refreshments at an ice cream stall. While a pronounced success socially, the function, also- -achieved financial results which -should prove mo-s-E encouraging to the president (Mrs. V . E. Hollard) and the secretary (Mrs. T. Bennie) together with, the other Huh members responsible for the organis;i’i.r work. It is understood that an endeavour is to be made in the near future to arrange for a -similar function at Kapuni, where the club’s fancy dress hall held recently was considered l>y those in attendance- to he one of the outstanding events of the .season.
