The railway disaster at Oatenzaro «las the sequel to a disastrous storm and series of cloudbursts, which ravaged Calabria, flooded Avide areas and destroyed many farmsteads. The train was proceeding by night through a heavy rainstorm' and was crossing the Rrver Ponzo, when the trestles of the bridge collapsed. The locomotive and leading coach dived into the cataract with the shrieking occupants and floated for a hundred yards before they sank. Numbers of, passengers were clrmvned.
