HIS FAMILY OR HIS LIFE.

AMIR’S ALTERNATIVE TO A , REBEL. IN THE WRONG ARMY. Janat Khan, a rebel Afghan, leader, has set forth from Kabul on a strange pilgrimage. Death awaits at the end of it unless he is able to - return in a month and a half with every member of his own family and every near relative. They will be kept in custody as hostages for Janat, Khan if they come, and they will be put to death with the Khan himself if they do not. The Amir of Afghanistan is the source of this truly Oriental judgment. Janat’s offence was that after being granted permission to fight the Afghan rebels he fought instead in their tanks. He gave as a reason an alleged attempt by the Government to poison him. , The rebel .later sought an audience of the Amir. He was ill-received. The Amir drew a, revolver from his belt arid threatened to shoot Janat Khan. He changed his mind with finger on trigger, and promised to spare Janat’s life —on the conditions cited.
