PEACE IN EUROPE
RHINELAND PACT. BRITAIN’S ONLY CONCERN. NO OTHER COMMITMENTS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT. Received Oct. 7, 30.10 a.m. LONDON, Oct. G. The Times, in a leader, declares that it is a Rhineland pact alone which seriously concerns Britain, and beyond that we have and can have no possible commitments.
The Times adds that although France has Eastern European commitments, she may be persuaded to subordinate them to the valuable achievement of a Rhineland pact. After all, guaranteed peace in the West wjll greatly lessen the dangers of serious trouble iu the East.—Times.
. PRELIMINARY PROCEEDINGS. GETTING TO WORK AT ONCE. LOCARNO, Oct. 5. The Security Pact Conference has opened. The Mayor welcomed the delegates. Mr Austin Chamberlain (British Foreign Secretary), in an inaugural address, said he hoped the conversations would be kept free and informal, all meeting on a footing pf perfect equality without a formal president. The conference decided to waive discussion of a general nature in order to immediately consider the articles of the draft security pact drawn up by experts of the Powers in London recently. An agreement was immediately reached in regard to certain articles, amendments were proposed and other articles were reserved for fuller examination by the legal experts, while other articles were reserved for later examination by the conference. All were delighted with the celerity with which the conference began its discussions and the progress already made. The Germans regard the session as auguring final success.
