ITEMS OF INTEREST. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY, Oct. 5. The seventieth anniversary of the eiigbt-hour day was celebrated by the usual procession through the city streets. The weather was fine aud large crowds were attracted. A feature of the procession was the inclusion of the striking British seamen, but they evoked little enthusiasm. An aggregate meeting of colliery employees at Maitland considered the qlaimys of hand labour and decided to leave the matter in the nands of the executive of the Miners’ Federation. The meeting defeated a motion: That “.should employees not concede .a minimum wage of £5 10s a week, lurther aggregate meetings be held.” LONDON, Oct. 5.

The Daily Express Glasgow correspondent states: In November, 1924, a lour-year-old girl was assaulted and murdered at Stirling. Alexander Bickenstatfe was charged with the crime, but was not put on trial owing to his mental condition, and he was detained pending His Majesty’s pleasure. He always declared his innocence. As the result of new evidence the police are now seeking four men who gave evidence against Bickerstaffe, and it is expected their discovery will result m the release of Bickerstaffe. —Ams.-N.Z. Thi-s. is only the twenty-sixth time in the history of t.ne Exchange that Saturday sales have passed the million mark. The previous record was established on August IS, 1906, with 1,603,430.
