A GOVERNMENT DUTY
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYBIGHT, LONDON, Oot. 1. The first official view of the recent-ly-formed organisation for the maintenance of supplies was conveyed by the Home Secretary in a letter to a friend who had asked for information as to the Government’s views. Sir William Joyson-Hicks stated that he had told the organisation frankly that it was the Government’s dirty to preserve order and maintain supplies, and it was prepared to carry out that duty, having already adopter! his own plans for that purpose. The Government had not thought it necessary to make a. public parade of its willingness and ability to do its duty, and did not desire to assume wliat might be regarded as a by enrolling several hundred thousand men. However, the Minister added, he had informed the promoters that there could ibe no objection to the inauguration of a body which doubtless would aid the Government by supplying classified lists "of men willing to place their services at the disposal of the country.
LIKELY TO CAUSE TROUBLE. RAMSAY MACDONALD’S COMPLAINT. LONDON, Oot. 5. The Leader of the Labour Party (Mr Rlamsay MacDonald) in a letter to the Press protests against the Home Secretary (Sir W. Jolnson-Hicks) blessing the private and irresponsible attempt to maintain certain public services in the event of ’a, paralysing trade dispute. Mr. MacDonald says : . “Labour is too experienced to place reliance on the declarations of an innocent purpose. The despair of getting redress or justice by constitutional means has been increased by the publication of the letter, which will ibe considered in hundreds of places as an encouragement by the Government of pernicious private, organisations, formed to create disturbance and foment revolutionary paission. It- is useless to fight revolution at Liverpool if it is being bred at Whitehall.”
