TWO SMUGGLERS CAUGHT.
LARGE SEIZURE IN DIAMONDS, GEMS HIDDEN IN CANDY. P __ SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 8. An interested party stated' the other day that soft goods to the value of £5",000,C0D were smuggled annually from the United States into Canada. It is officially known that large quantities of merchandise are secretly taken across the border and the authorities have to resort to clever devices to trace offenders. It is now revealed that a carpet Cleaner and a book-keep, er endeavoured to smuggle £20,000 worth of diamonds into Canada across the'line from the State of Nejv York. In one of the trunks special agents found two boxes of candy which, when opened, yielded diamonds of various size concealed between layers of choco-late-covered nuts and candied fruits. Gems valued at £BOOO were found in the frame of a shoe-brush. It is one of the largest seizures of diamonds in recent years, but the authorities are by no means certain that they have secured the whole “bag.”
