Alice Davies (21) living with her father at a small cojfee shop in Bethnal Green, was aroused at midnight, aiui, having an intuition that a burglar was in her hedro-om, stretched out her hand and felt a man crawling on the floor. She screamed, and her father rushed in. There as a fierce fight for severs-. minutes, and when Alice returned with assistance both men were lying on the floor, motionless.
The father son recovered, but the stranger was unconscious. He was removed to an infirmary, where he died, j He was identified as .Joseph William - ison, 30 years of age. | It transpires that Williamson, who vvas separated front liis wife and family, | habitually dined at the coffee shop, and was friendly for months with Alis.s Davies until she learned that her love:.was married, and dismissed him. When both men were exhausted, tho father alleged, Williamson drault from a bottle of disinfectant. At the inquest the jury returned a, verdict of suicide. Alice Davies identified messages in Williamson’s handwriting, scribbled on" a cardboard box on the . dressingtable. ‘‘Alice, don’t speak,” sa.id one, “otf your life is in danger. 1 warn you/ Joe is jn your room. Study your life and mine. Yours ever.” She added that Williamson tokl her : “If 1 can’t liave you no one else shall.” The police gave evidence tliht they discovered a knife arid other weapons in the room. The coroner expressed the opinion that. Williamson's intention was to murder Alice Davies, and then dramatically to commit suicide.
