McLeod opened his campaign for the Wairarapa seat at Carterton last night, when a large attendance heard the. popular Minister. He defended th© Government against charges of extravagance and wastefulness, and challenged its opponents to come into the open and disapprove of any expenditure. He instanced the progress made on roadiing, settlement, housing, telephones and settlement of soldiers on the land. The expenditure had been big, but it was fully justified. Regarding fusion, he still held to his policy that he would he no party to a bargain between the two parties without the consent of the people. If his party was returned and found it was lacking a working majority he would willingly drop his Ministerial position and assist in negotiations for the establishment of a sound, stable Government. if the will of the people pointed in that direction. He referred to the shipping strike, and said that the Government was doing the best it could to reach a settlement. The speech was well received, and met with frequent applause. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
