“THE TOREADOR.”
BRILLIANT CONCLUDING PERFORMANCE. • The end of the season for the Operatic Society’s production of “The Toreador” was marked by a performance which in every respect was a real triumph fjpr all concerned. The performers—principals, chorus and orchestra alike —gave of their very best, and the result was a performance quite the most successful ever given in Hawera. The house was packed to the doors, and everyone was delighted with the work of the company. The popularity of the opera was forcibly shown by the fact that the queue began to form up long before tea time, and continued for several hour*.
The singing and acting of the principals was excellent, and the choruses went with a wonderful swing and verve. During the evening the president (Mr H. L. Spratt) made the announcement that the receipts had exceeded the expenses by more than £2OO, the total receipts being well over £7OO. In a short speech he thanked the people cordially for their great support, and also all* -that large bodv of workers whose help went so far in making for success. He made special mention of the producer (Mr Theo. Tresizeb the wardrobe mistress (Mrs Mcßeth), the business manager and secretary (Mr W. J. Woollett), the conductor (Mr F. H. Ollerenshaw), the pianiste (Mrs R. A. Graham), and also all others who had taken part in the production. Each in turn was called before the footlights, and had to respond to an enthusiastic reception. He also thanked business people who permittedi those engaged in the work to attend many rehearsals. . , After the performance the whole company adjourned to the Golden Minim,'and after supper they had a few dances. Before dispersing “Auld Lang Syne” was sung, and a very happy aiid busy season terminated.
