N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS. YESTERDAY’S PLAY. (BY TET.EGRAPH PRESS ASSnbTATOO'I. CHRISTCHURCH, Sent. 30 T weaNs flno oignh. aimclilaZhd \\ The New. Zealand "golf championship meeting wa-s continued to-day, principal .interest centring on the third round of the amateur championship. In tins event the semi-finals have now been reached, and they will be decided on Friday. The semi-finals of the professional championship will he played to- j morrow. Details of to-day’s play are: AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. Third Round. A. Duncan beat E. A. sSeott 9 up and A. E. Conway beat .1. Drake 2 up ‘"iv? 1 Ross beat J. L. Black, 6 up and 5. T. FI. Horton beat A. G. Sime 4 up and 3. „ AMATEUR BOGEY. IV. G. Fisher (Te/Kuiti) and R. L. Fisher (Christchurch) tied for firstplace, all square. PROFESSIONAL HANDICAP. (36 holes). J. Galloway 146 C. Cements 149 J. McCormick 152 T. Galloway 153 G. AY. Macrae 153 REST CARDS. Horton 77 Duncan 78 Sime 80 A. D. Duncan turned on some “hot stuff” in the second half of his morning round, producing eight fours out ci nine holes. He did not- hole out at the 13th, : missing his tee shot. This sort of scoring-suggests that it- was no- disgrace to E. A. Scott to have to .strike • his colours- to such an old campaigner as Duncan, especially in Duncan’s second ha'f of the first round, hut. for which the Timaru player would have gone further in the game. Horton continues his good golf, but appears a trifle nervy at his short putts. He sank two magnificent putts to-day that .never looked like missing the hole. . Conway only arrived here oil the eve of the meeting, and without any practice he has played himself -into the semi-finals, but not till- after a hard game with his club mate, ,1. Drake, who could not put up the same game that lie beat B. B. Wood with. Drake was weak to-day in his usual sound game of approaching .and putting. 1 The fact of Dr. Ross defeating a player of J. L. Black’s calibre so comfortably shows that the doctor is playing really well, which, he is, as his returns show. He is always in the. seventies. J. L. Black was playing a few strokes below anticipated form, and after his good showing in previous rounds his game to-day was disappointing.
NOTES ON THE PLAY. ( ~ A grind dear, of interest was mani-fested-by golfer* in the results of yesi Wv-.
terday’s play in the third round of the amateur championship, tq see which four would be eliminated, and so provide- the semi-finalists. The results leave A. Duncan, A. E. Conway, K. Ross and T. H. Horton still .in, and : they will fight out the semi-finals tomorrow. The golfing world of the Dominion will await with .interest the news of to-morrow’s matches. . The professionals play their semifinals to-day, and they should provide two great displays of golf. There was a mistake in (the drawings as sent through- yesterday, which matched Ross and Conway and Drake and Black, whereas these should have been reversed. The change meant that J. L. Black, whose chances had been favoured by, many; met probably the strongest player except perhaps Duncan. "And lie met him .in a fine scoring vein, and had to admit defeat by a "big margin. In his match with Duncan, Scott, though he put- up a good performance, was quite outclassed by the veteran exchampion. The .latter appears to have struck his topmost form and to have been steadily playing himself back from the very mediocre displays he gave in the open. Duncan recovered his putting form in the second nine holes, and as his tee shots and approaches were of his best, he gave Scott no chance. Continuing in the afternoon,. the veteran played very consistent golf, hut perhaps hardly as brilliantly. He finished the match at the twenty-ninth bole.
Conway and Drake had a great contest) hut neither was showing classy play. Horton, playing like a champion, returned a 77 to Sime’s 80, and was two up on; his opponent. He Improved this by one at the eleventh in it-he afternoon, and at the next, setting a. stymie for Sime, who unfortunately holed his opponent’s ball in an endeavour to get round. Tliis was very bad luck, leaving him. four down and six to go. At the hext he just failed to hole a three, while Horton got liis putt down and stood dormy five. Facing a hard position, Sime won the next) hut a pulled shot landed him in difficulties. and Horton, making no mistake, ended the match there.
SEMI-FINALS TO-MORROW. THE MATCHES. To-morrow should see two good matches, and on present form Duncan and Ross should meet in the final; but tlio other two are good enough to upset calculations. A. Duncan will plav Conway and K. Ross will meet T. H. Horton. NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING HELD.', NEXT TOURNEY AT MIRAMAR. (BY ,t>tt - v«» *9B°°! VTIGN. 1 CHRISTCHURCH, Sep. 30.
