WAVERLEY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) SCHOOL RUGBY. It is pleasing to record that the local '•'Midgets” were successful on Saturday last in winning the Midget competition run under the auspices oi the Wanganui Metropolitan Hugbv Union. Each boy of the eight is to be the recipient"’ of a medial as a reward, the donor being Mr. F. Haywood, chairman of the Metropolitan Union. Waverley boys have thus won two out of the three competitions this year—a splendid performance of a school of two hundred pupils. It is not out of place here to mention the fact that local Rugby enthusiasts and supporters of the school have been most generous during the football season, supporting the school and providing ears on every occasion the teams have travelled. The. boys have been well catered for, and can thank their generous supporters for a successful and pleasant season’s pfay. Mr". C. Browning, headmaster of the Waverley school, has received the following letter of thanks from Mr. W. P. Williams, secretary of the Wanganui school football competitions: ‘‘We are sincerely thankful for the £lO you so kindly collected. Will you. on our behalf, convey our thanks to all those who so generously responded.''” Mr. Browning wishes to convey his thanks and appreciation to those residents who so kindly helped him in everv way during the football season. FARMERS’ UNION. A meeting of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Friday, Mr Morrison (chairman of the Waitotara County Council) having been invited to address the farmers on matters appertaining to main highways, heavy traffic licenses, etc. But the attendance was so r>ecr, owing to the weather and the condition of the roads, that it was decided to postpone the address until some future date when a larger attendance could he assured. The chairman (Mr Andrew Elmslie) explained the position to Mr Morrison, and apologised for the small number present.
The chairman moved: That this branch of the Farmers’ Union accords a sincere vote of svmpnthy to the relafives of the late Mr Alex. Howie, and that the same he recorded in the minutes. He said Mr Howie had been a very good friend to the union, and hit- death was a distinct loss to his Fellow-members. The motion was" carried in silence, all standing.
Tt was decided to hold future meetings on the third Friday in each month at 7.30 p.m. instead of at 2.30 n.m.. ns ha.s been the practice lately, with the object of increasing the attendance at meetings.
Mr Stan. Aiken asked why the Farmers’ Union Mutual Insurance branch was shifted from Waverley. TTo said farmers insured with other companies doing business locally rather than go to the trouble of writing to the Farmers’ Mutual Office in Wanganui.
The explanation was that the Dominion Executive was reorganising the insurance branch of the union, with a view to making one big company for the whole Dominion to replace the old system of each provincial union running its own insurance branch. This would place the Farmers’ Mutual in a hotter position to compote with other insurance companies.
The appointment of a delegate to represent Waverley on the Farmers'
Mutual Insurance Board, in succession to the late Mr Alex. Howie, was disessed at some length, it being finally decided to appoint Mr Gregor McGregor. subject to his approval. Mr Morrison stated with regard to the Chair of Agriculture at Victoria •University College that the Minister had made them a definite promise that a sum would be placed on the Supplementary Estimates for this purpose. LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN.
The annual smoke concert of the Waverley troop of the Legion was held, on Friday evening last. Lieut. R. Alley presided over a very enthusiastic gathering. The visitors included Captain L. Andrew, V.C. (New Plymouth), Lieut. Vickridge and S.S.M. Mahoney (Hawera). . After the usual toasts had been duly honoured each member had to give ah item of some sort. This stage proved very interesting and amusing, both ns regards quality and variety. Much of the success of the gathering-was due to the troop secretary (Sergeant L. Neilson.).
