FINEST IN THE WORLD

CHILD WELFARE SYSTEM.

PRAISE FOR NEW ZEALAND.

MODEL FOR- OTHER SCHEMES

UY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT

deceived Sept. 30, 11.15 a.m. SYDNEY, Sent. 30. Dr. Henrietta Main, who was sent to New Zealand by the English Universities Ito study the Dominion’s system of child welfare, and who arrived in Sydney by the Uiimaroa, says that Sir Truby King’s calorie scheme for the prevention of infant mortality is the finest in the world. His system, according to Dr. Main, is . absolutely scientific, practical, and a matter of common sense Dr Main explained that mothers-of all classes, were showing a keen interest, a thing unknown in other countries, The children of New Zealand were exceedingly healthy, owing to the application of the system. • _ The same results would accrue in Australia if the system were introduced . Mortality among infants an this country was higher than, in Britain. In a healthy climate like this such should not be the case. Australia’s latest statistics showed that 57 infants in every thousand, died at birth. This -was the lowest rate, oil mortality for some years. In Britain and America leading physicians were working on a .calorie system, but had not extended the results of their investigations to mothers, As Sir Truby King had done in New Zealand. A centre had been established in London, but no effective organisation had been carried into effect. Dr. Main, when making her report, expects that it will result- in Sir Truby King’s system being extensively, carried out in the British Isles.
