NEW FACILITIES. PICTURES BY WERE. BY CABLE— PEESS ASSOCIATION—COPYEIGHT MELBOURNE, Sep. 29. The conference of the Empire Press Union opened to-day. Lord Burnham \A"as elected president. Hie isitated that in broad casting the Press had tat last found its real rivals and contestants in public favour, though it had no reason to fear that its influence was on the wane. Lord; Burnham predicted that there would ,soon be portraiture by wire accompanying tbe descriptive matter, as had already been done experimentally. Roughly speaking, as a direct and immediate •consequence of the first conference, added Lord Burnham, cable rates for the supply of neivs for all parts of the Empire had been halved in amount or, to put in conversely but more accurately, it Avtas doubled in extent 'since the first conference. Other substantial reductions had been obtained, but above all the delegates should congratulate themselves on the reduction recently conceded of i-i-d per Avoi d on the Australian service by an agreement betAA r een the British Post Office, the Australian Poet 'Office, and the Pacific Oafoile Board.
