THAMES

(by TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) THAMES, Sept. 24. Mr W. E. G. Willy, Nationalist candidate for Thames, addressed the electors last night. He- claimed that he understood the workers’ conditions, xie favoured two issues only tin the liquor question, also an elective Upper House, preferential voting, that maternity homes he a direct charge on the State, and ne religion in schools. He complained of the laxness of the Prisons Board. The candidate eulogised the railway policy of Mr Coates, but contended that all orders for rolling stock should be placed in New Zealand. He advocated cheaper telephones, and attacked the schemes of the Public V orks Department for the Waihou River improvement and Hauraki Plains drainage, which he declared would have to come eventually on to the Consolidated Fund. A vote of' thanks was accorded to the candidate. WAIRARAPA ELECTORATE. CARTERTON, Sep. 24. At a well-attended meeting last night Mr F. T. Arkle, National candidate for the Wairarapa seat, opened his campaign. He was supported by Mr R. 'Masters, M.P., whose speech was on familiar lines. Mr Arkle urged closer settlement, Mr Masters attacking the shortcomings of the Government. Replying to Hon. A. D. McLeod, Mr Masters said that policy was discussed at the fiision conference, and Mr McLeod knew it. A resolution was carried that the time had now arrived for the formation of a national party. __________
