The Mn.rchese di Pinedo, accompanied by hi.s mechanic, Ernesto Oampanelh, left Sesto Oalende in a Savoia flying boat on April 21, with the intention of flying to Melbourne and thence via Tokio back to Italy. On that clay he reached Brindisi. From, Brindisi iie flew in stages to Laras, Bagdad and Busihire, where he arrived on April 27. He reached Charbar on May 1 and Karachi on May 5. Three days later he flew to Bombay, and on May 11 alighted at Cbcanada, Madras, continuing to Calcutta on the following day. He reached Akyab on May 13, Rangoon on May 14, Tavoy on May 18, Mergui on May 21, Puket (Siam) on May 22, Penang on May 23, Singapore on May 24, Batavia on May 25, Surabaya (Jiava) on May 27, Sumbawa Island on May 28, Kupang (Timor) on May 29, Broome (Western Australia) on May 31, Carnarvon on June 2, Perth cn June 3, Bunbury on June 4, Albany on June 5, Israelite Bay on June 6, Adelaide on June 8, and Melbourne on June 17. His machine is a Savoia 5.16 Ter. Amphibian flying boat, designed, for bombing and reconnaissance, built' by the 5.1.A.1. firm of Sesto Oalende. A single 450 h.p. engine is fitted. The maximum speed is stated to be 124 miles an hour, v-nd its cruising radius 930 miles. A machine of this type attained a height of 15,000 ft. with a load of 11001 b. The Marches© took with him a questionnaire in the language of every country over which he was likely to pass, in order that he might be able to eiict information and heli> from the natives in case of forced landing. The Marchese, who is 36 yeans of age, is a Neapolitan. He earned distinction as a pi'ot during the war, and was, until he began his flight to'Melbourne, chief staff officer of the Italian military air arm.
