MIGRATION SYSTEM.

AID FOR IMMIGRANTS. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 23. A clause in the report of the benevolent committee created a good deal of discussion at to-day’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. The clause read: “A report from the police recently received calls attention to the ease with which persons obtain nomination as immigrants to . New Zealand. The case in question is being reported to the Immigration _ Department, and also to the Minister for Health.” The Rev. F,. Rule said the manner in which immigrants were being sent out here was nothing short of shocking He had been chairman of the coal and blanket fund for some years, and . every winter for the past two or three years they had been up against the problem of families landing in this city with not enough to get a meal for" themselves, far less for their children. They had no bedding for a new home in a new city, and were not here thiee months before they were apmying for blankets to cover them. He did not know who was responsible for their leaving the Old Country, but it was time somebody took action. A doctor had told lnm that they eould not tell whether immigrants had tuberculosis without examination, but, they (the benevolent committee) knew they had no money in their pockets. It was agreed that a return should be furnished for the next meeting of the board showing the number of cases which had come before the benevolent committee from immigrant families.
