HOUSE' OF REPRESENTATIVES. WELLINGTON, Sent. 23. The Hon se of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m. to-day. In reply to Dir. H. Amendments to the Main Highways Amendment Bill, introduced by Gover-nor-General’s message, were considered in committee. The Minister explained that they were chiefly verbal, but one provided the same powers for the Main Highways- Board as for local , bodies under the Public- Works Act in- the matter of (taking land for works and the payment of compensation. Replying to criticisms directed to the claim that local bodies should receive a larger subsidy from the Highways Board, the Minister said reference had been made to the number of highways in the North Island, and he pointed out that the Government was maintaining more roads in the South Island than in the- North Island.

Touching oil complaints that the railways were neglected,- Mr.” Coates said he considered it better for the Government ito build and liiaintain highways in certain districts than to construct railways, the 'working of which would only he productive of,an annual loss, The Bill was reported from committee with amendments. Amendments made in the Elecetric Wire-men’s Registration Bill byy the Legislative Council were agreed to. The House then wont into committee on the Apprentices’ Amendment Bill, which the Hon. G. J. Anderson explained embodied suggestions : of the Arbitration Court. The‘Bill was reported without amendment, read a third time and passed. Amendments made by the Legislative Council in the Weights and M ensures Bill were approved. The House rose at 12.20 a.m. till 2.30 p.m
