SHIPS BUFFETED BY GALES. BY CABLE —pB.V.JW usSOrnTTON —COPVRTOHT WASHINGTON, Sept. 21. The National Geographic Society lias received a radio report that the; Peary., the aeroplane-carrier of the MacMillan Arctic expedition, sheltered in. a; haven on the Labrador coast, having successfully crossed the treacherous Davis Strait from Greenland after fighting high seas and gales for nineteen hours. The schooner Bowdoin has not yet been able to negotiate; the passage owing to the gales. She was last reported to be tied to a rock in Godthainb Fjord on the Greenland coast, riding out thei storm. The Peary’s radio antenna was. torn off twice by high winds, but the ship made a; record; passage because the winds were favourable from the north and reached-a velocity of 75 miles an hour. The Peary will (proceed to Battle harbour as soon as the weather permits. Captain MacMillan said: “We have been running for cover from one cove to another, dropping anchor in sheltered spots and raising it when it dragged before the power of the shifting gales. ” Captain MacMillan advised the; National Geographic Society that, bad weather had delayed the expedition, which would probably reach the United States about October 10.
