DUNEDIN EXHIBITION.

MAWiEHA/S Q U OTA. BORIOUGH COUNCIL TO 00>N- ‘ TRIBUTE. The Hawera Borough Council last evening decided to subscribe its quota (Bob) towards «. 'Taranaki bay in the associated provincial court in the Sew Zealand and South Seas .Exhibition. The secretary of the exhibition organisation, Mr. T>. (J\ G. Morgan, .wrote stating that .a Taranaki committee had been-set up by the general meeting held recently .at New Plymouth lanjd addressed by Uapt. McDonald, ior the purpose of organising a canvass qf the local bodies of Taranaki for the purpose of raising £IOOO to enable Taranaki to be represented in conjunction with .Wellington, Nelson and Hawke's Bay, Auckland, Canterbury, Otago atidj Southland would each have courts of their own, but. Wellington, Wairarapa, and Manawatu were linding about £OOOO and Nelson, Hawke’s Bay anti Taraiiaki about £IOOO each, in order to lit out an associated provincial court costing between £7,000 and £9,000. The Hawera Borough Council's, quota under the Taranaki scheme was £5(5.

The Mayor, Mr. E. A. Pac-ey, reported that Oaipt. McDonald (organiser) and Air. D. Le G. Morgan (secretary) had waited on him and Or. Morrissey the previous day. They had intended to wait as a deputation on the council, but, owing .to the council meeting being held on Tuesday instead of Monday, they could not wait. His Worship said that before the interview he had not been altogether convince that there was much in the scheme, or indeed that there was much to be gained by having an exhibition at all, but after the arguments in favour of the proposal had been placed before them, lie had been forced to alter his views somewhat. The deputation had pointed out amongst other things that already 16,000 people had booked their passages to the exhibition, and altogether about 7)0,000 people would be coming to the Dominion and would spend some time touring the country. Haiwera. might not be directly benefited, but indirectly it would. Special legislation was being put through Parliament in order to enable local bodies to raise their contributions bv way of overdraft, so avoiding interference with the current year’s estimates. The Mayor moved that the council subscribe its quota. C'r. E. Morrissey in seconding, gave the council further information, imparted, by the deputation. The exhibition meant, that about £1,000,000 would be spent tin the Dominion. Or. Gilbert also .spoke In favour of the motion, which wais then put and carried.

The Mayor was appointed a>s the council’s delegate on the Taranaki committee. •'
