A working profit of £SB-,508 is shown by .the Railway Department’s working account for four weeks ended August 15. For the corresponding period of last year ithe profit was £34,354. The receipts comprised £300,715 from the Month Island, £200,488 from the South Island, and £33,142 from miscellaneous services, the • total of £534,307 showing an increase of £59,122 over the corresponding period of last year. lExpenditure was £245,101 in the Month Island. £209,558 in the South Island, and £21,139 in respect of miscellaneous services, a total of £475,799, which is £34,969 hi-hov than last jear. Interesting figures were recently released by Colonel P. M. Smoot, Adju-tant-General of the Hawaii National Guard, showing the racial elements which make, up the home military organisation. Hawaiians make up the larger portion of the guard, there be•■'ng 468 out of 1463, total number of the guard. The remainder is divided into different nationalities as follows: Anglo-Saxon 166: Polish 1; Russian 1 Greek 1; Spanish 3: Portuguese 215; Mexican 1; Negro 5; Part-Hawaiian 87; Indians (American and .’Cast') 2; •Tapanese 68 ; Chinese 135; Korean 28: Porto Rican 74; Filipino 204); and Samoan 4.
